Be prepared for a visual feast when we hit this topic. Certainly, the most colorful section for me is going to be the Work With Graphics section as Word has some wonderfully visual graphics features and we'll look at everything, from the new Graphics Effects to Smart Art and Capturing Screen Shots and creating Charts in your document. Another of the bread and butter uses for Microsoft Word is in Mail Merge and I have an entire section on Mail Merge from creating a simple Mail Merge Letter to a Directory and E-mail Merge, as well as creating Envelopes and Labels.
When you're working collaboratively with others there are tools that you can use to track the changes that you make to the document and we'll look at these, including how to incorporate and remove these changes from your document. We'll look at customizing the Ribbon and also recording a Macro that we'll attach to the Ribbon to make it quick and easy to play back the Macro. Word 2010 has a new feature which allows you to customize the Ribbon and the Quick Access Toolbar. We'll look at the built-in Styles in Microsoft Word and how they relate to Themes and Style Sets and how to create and use Styles. Styles are what you use to format text in an intelligent and speedy way. I'll also show you some special features of tables that you can use with Specialty Papers for creating Name Badges and Business Cards. One of the bread and butter tools in Microsoft Word is Tables and, again, there's an entire section on Tables from creating them to formatting them and even getting Word to make calculations inside the table. There's a whole section on working with long documents that gives you all the tools you need to create anything from annual reports to a great looking thesis. When you're working with long documents you'll need special tools such as Headers and Footers, Cover Pages and even Section Breaks.
I'll also show you how to set up your page to the size that you want to work at. From Text we'll move to Paragraph and Page formatting, learning how to organize paragraphs of text with borders and shading and spacing. We'll also look at some specialty tools such as Hyphenation and Special Characters and Hyperlinks. Then we'll move forward into some more advanced formatting and get to grips with some of the new features in Microsoft Word 2010, including the new Text Effects and WordArt. I'll also show you some tools to speed up your day, such as Find and Replace, Auto Correct and using Quick Parts. I'll show you how to Spell Check and Grammar Check your documents and how to find and use the Thesaurus. Then we'll go ahead and start working with Text including entering text and applying Formats to it and typing Numbered and Bulleted Lists. Of course, you'll learn how to create your own Document Template, too and I'll show you how to Print documents. We'll then start working with Word files, learning to Open and Close a document, create a new Blank Document and one from a Document Template. I'll also show you how to get help if you need it. We'll start with a general look at the Program Window for Microsoft Word and I'll show you how to find your way around the Ribbon, the new Backstage View and other elements on the screen such as the Mini Toolbar and Task Panes. I'm not assuming that you've ever seen any of Microsoft's applications before, but if you have then some of the Interface will, no doubt, be familiar to you.
